Jet is a former Intra Solar System Police investigator from Ganymede who is also nicknamed as Black Dog by his former affiliation. At 36 years of age, Black is a jack-of-all-trades who finds himself immersed in many different cultures and philosophies taken from knowledge he has grown to find as a daily lifestyle and enjoys sharing this information with fellow Bounty Hunter partner, Spike Spiegel. Blacks hobbies include cultivating Bonsai trees, jazz music, and cooking. Jet is also good with mechanics and owns the fishing trawler vessel which he named after a type of jazz; The Bebop. Not only can he pilot the Bebop, he also has another ship that is smaller on board named the Hammerhead which is also modified from it's original form and original purpose.

He is a very tall man who doesn't smoke as much as Spike, yet enjoys it as a once in awhile thing. He can sometimes be a bit pushy when instructing with Spike which gives him a fatherly attitude. It's like that on the Bebop since it's his ship and all, yet her prefers being seen as more of a big brother type of figure; a caring kind of guy. A dirty past reveals a setup where a former friend had arranged for Jets death within an investigation, and Black losing an arm and gaining a scar with a metal plate against his cheekbone during his survival. That would be when Jet left the ISSP in disgust over the corruption within the system and finding that his old partner within the ISSP was who looking to end his life.

Black is also good with hand-to-hand combat, yet isn't one to use as many techniques like that of Spike and prefers using raw muscle in a fight. He is, however - one to face his demons from the past and let them go which differs the personality of his Bounty Hunter partner. When the crew expanded and occupied three new bodies which included two female and a data dog from their mysterious run-ins with bounties. But that doesn't mean that anyone goes hungry on the Bebop, which is where he sadly gets thrown the apron and the 'feed me' eyes. It's what it's like, being the jack-of-all-trades.
